Unesco Sites of Sicily

Below we have listed the monuments and sites that may, upon request, be included in your tailor made holiday to Sicily. All our holidays are custom-made and we will be delighted to include your request in your Sicilian holiday

Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples

Agrigento is a superb witness the splendor of one of the most important Greek colonies of the West. The ancient city extends over a large area known as the Valley of the Temples for the number of religious buildings displaying the richness and cultural development of the colony until the fourth century AD

Piazza Armerina - Villa Romana del Casale

With an area of over 3500 square meters, the Villa was the hunting residence of Maximilian Herculean, colleague of Diocletian in the management of the Roman Empire.

It is extraordinary representation of Roman life through its mosaic floors, famous throughout the world.

The importance of the Villa is due to the impeccable condition of the mosaics, considered also the largest and most fascinating ever made in Roman times.

Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands provide an outstanding record of volcanic island-building and destruction, and ongoing volcanic phenomena.

Studied since at least the 18th century, the islands have provided the science of vulcanology with examples of two types of eruption (Vulcanian and Strombolian) and thus have featured prominently in the education of geologists for more than 200 years. The site continues to enrich the field of vulcanology.

The Baroque Towns of the Noto Valley

The Val di Noto is the territory of eastern Sicily, which geographically corresponds to the southernmost tip of the island, found between the province of Ragusa, Syracuse and the provinces of Catania and Caltanissetta.

Of all the towns in the Val di Noto, the towns of Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli have been listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the Sicilian Baroque architecture that characterises them

Pantalica

Pantalica is the naturalistic and archaeological area of the province of Syracuse.  In 2005 she was honored along with the historic center of Syracuse with the title of World Heritage by UNESCO.

The site consists of two separate elements, containing outstanding vestiges dating back to Greek and Roman times: The Necropolis of Pantalica contains over 5,000 tombs cut into the rock near open stone quarries, most of them dating from the 13th to 7th centuries BC. Vestiges of the Byzantine era also remain in the area, notably the foundations of the Anaktoron (Prince’s Palace).

The other part of the property, Ancient Syracuse, includes the nucleus of the city’s foundation as Ortygia by Greeks from Corinth in the 8th century BC. The site of the city, which Cicero described as ‘the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of all’, retains vestiges such as the Temple of Athena (5th century BC, later transformed to serve as a cathedral), a Greek theatre, a Roman amphitheatre, a fort and more.

Many remains bear witness to the troubled history of Sicily, from the Byzantines to the Bourbons, interspersed with the Arabo-Muslims, the Normans, Frederick II of the Hohenstaufen dynasty (1197–1250), the Aragons and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Historic Syracuse offers a unique testimony to the development of Mediterranean civilization over three millennia.
