Pisciotta
Perched atop a hill covered with olive groves that stretches towards an emerald sea, Pisciotta is a medieval town of simple beauty in the heart of the Cilento Park.
Its marina offers a coastline stretching for 10km with diverse beaches surrounded by a spontaneous Mediterranean marquis.
It seems that the origins of Pisciotta are linked to the destruction of Troy (650 BC) after that the same Trojans escaping the destruction of their city, landed on the Ionic sea shores where they founded the city of Siri.
The Sirini expanded up to the Tyrrhenian Sea, in today's Gulf of Policastro, where they founded Pixous.
The name Pixous, from the root Pyx, comes from boxwood, evergreen shrub that is a symbol of youth, strength and courage, reproduced on the coat-of-arms of Pisciotta
Later, in 194 BC, the Greek Pixous became the Roman Buxentum and in 915, when the Saracens attacked and burned it, the town changed its name to Policastro.
And it was in 915, that Pisciotta was founded, after the inhabitants of Buxentum fled their city and chose the name Pixoctum (small Pixous), today known as Pisciotta.
The main work of art, in the Cilento, is surely its nature, inserted in the Unesco World heritage for its beauty and richness, but apart from this priceless natural resource, Pisciotta is part of a territory with significant evidence of ancient civilizations.
Within the medieval walls there is the Palazzo Marchesale Pappacoda built on the ruins of an ancient castle of the 12th century, the Palazzo Francia built in 15th century with its portal in sandstone and the Palazzo Lancellotti of 16th century belonged to the Bishop Lancellotti.
Another remarkable bulding is the Church of SS. Apostles Peter and Paul of the 16th century which contains many works of art as precious as the effigy of the Madonna delle Grazie and the statues of SS. Peter and Paul.
Furthermore Pisciotta is a short distance from the archaeological site of Paestum, and with easy access to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
