Holidays in South Eastern Sicily

The baroque, the almond sorbet, the beaches and the sea. Large stretches of coastline and unspoiled wilderness. A genuine cuisine but also refined, with specialties of  the sea.

The south-eastern Sicily offers one of the most interesting destination in Sicily for its culture and landscape. And today is easily accessible thanks to the brand new airport of Catania Fontanarossa, where many airlines operate at low cost. The best way to explore this corner of Sicily is to rent a car.

January 11 1693. A terrific earthquake struck the south-eastern Sicily 45 villages were completely destroyed, many others seriously damaged. Two-thirds of the inhabitants of the area disappeared beneath the rubble. It is the largest natural disaster ever recorded in Italy

It is after this tragic event that Sicilian Baroque was born. The wealthy Sicilian aristocracy, which shared power with the Spanish monarchy and the religious orders, started the reconstruction work. Palaces, churches, sumptuous streets and squares, entire cities are rebuilt soon with the architecture of those times.
Noto, Modica, Ragusa, Siracusa ...Sicily in the south-eastern flourished, more beautiful than before and the architecture of this region, unique in the world became famous as the Sicilian Baroque.
