January 11 1693. A terrific earthquake struck the south-eastern Sicily 45 villages were completely destroyed, many others seriously damaged. Two-thirds of the inhabitants of the area disappeared beneath the rubble. It is the largest natural disaster ever recorded in Italy
It is after this tragic event that Sicilian Baroque was born. The wealthy Sicilian aristocracy, which shared power with the Spanish monarchy and the religious orders, started the reconstruction work. Palaces, churches, sumptuous streets and squares, entire cities are rebuilt soon with the architecture of those times.
