Tucked away on the quiet side of Salina, the Signum lies half-hidden among Malfa's citrus groves with fragranced pathways leading to a small rocky beach.

This one-time little farming hamlet is now a delightful boutique hotel. Its terraces, draped in bougainvillea and honeysuckle, have sea views out to Panarea and Stromboli.

No two rooms are the same, each filled with antiques and some with balconies and terraces.

Seafood lovers will enjoy traditional Aeolian dishes prepared by chef Michele Caruso.

Lunch & dinner can be enjoyed al fresco on the terrace overlooking the sea – all fish served is caught in the morning, with other ingredients sourced locally.

The panoramic terraces, with a view over Stromboli and Panarea, house the bar and the renowned restaurant where you may savour by candlelight both aperitifs and evening dinners;

Chef Michele Caruso will entertain you with the island's flavour-packed cuisine, you might get soft grilled aubergine with ricotta and tomato sauce, homemade pasta with today's fish and chopped celery, and/or tender tuna steaks with steamed spinach.

Hotel Signum has a total of 30 bedrooms, each one individually appointed and bearing the name of one of the fragrant plants which grow spontaneously on Salina.

Each room is different from the others: a blend of antiques and modern comforts, some enjoy a terrace, others a small balcony with inspiring views on the garden and the sea.

Rooms are divided in Classic garden view, Superior and De Luxe rooms sea view.

Hotel Signum is situated on the Aeolian island of Salina, the greenest most fertile of the Islands.

Located in one of the main three villages of the island, Malfa, the hotel is a short walk from a beautiful beach and a 10 minute drive from the main port.

The hotel can organise boat excursions around Salina and to the other islands. On dry land, you can head up to the mountains with trained guides.

There are tennis courts at guests’ disposal a few kilometres from the hotel. You can even hire a helicopter to take you back to the mainland or, even better, give you a tour of the other islands: how about stopping off and climbing Stromboli volcano.

Many of Salina’s beaches feature boulders, rather than sand. Steps from the hotel, Baio di Scario is recommended.

Near the town of Pollara, you’ll find the most magical bay of the Aeolian archipelago, famed as the backdrop to Il Postino.

Descend a few hundred steps, and you can dive off the rocks into the deep plunge pools.

The beach at Rinella is another favourite, and good for snorkelling: follow the paths to the Tre Pini campsite.

Salina: The great slow food caper

An initiative that over the years has evolved from a three-day event to a one month cultural event, involving capers and malvasia wine producers, restaurateurs and the whole host of the island of Salina, giving rise to the "Model Salina" in which, the enchanting nature, sustainable agriculture and gastronomic traditions become an attraction for a more responsible tourism.

Tasting classes on the caper and malvasia wine, workshops for children on tasting honey and capers and other initiatives are held through the month of May with the peak of the festival from Friday morning to Sunday night during the first weekend in June.
