Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are of volcanic origin. The archipelago is located to the north if Sicily and is composed of seven islands, the largest of which is Lipari, then Salina and Vulcano; to the west are Filicudi and Alicudi; to the north-east are Panarea and Stromboli.

Filicudi and Alicudi are the most ancient islands of the archipelago, dating back to apporximately one milion years ago. Vulcano and Stromboli are the youngest and are characterised by their particularly intense volcanic activity. The volcanic nature of these islands is manifested by their hot springs, submarine springs and thermal muds.
