Marina Grande

It's the most original area of Sorrento, completely untouched by urbanization and tourism facilities that have invaded the town, it was the hamlet of the fishermen.
   
It is separated from the rest of the city from a hill on which once stood the villa of Emperor Augustus.

The village of Marina Grande is accessed through an ancient gate (third century BC) in large blocks of limestone.

The gate is related to a story whereby the Turkish pirates who sacked Sorrento had penetrated through the gate left opened secretly during the night by a traitor.

As in the past Marina Grande remains a small close-knit community tied to the traditions, even today the scene in the port at sunset, as fishermen clean their nets and wrap up their day is evocative of a pre industrial lifestyle which has all but vanished from shores across the world.

The Gozzi Sorrentini, characteristic hand made wooden boats with triangular sails and light maneuverable structure, specifically adapted for fishing, were once crafted in the port.

Although "Gozzo" is a generic term for wooden vessels; those made in Sorrento are the vintage version in a boat-building tradition established over centuries.

Blue Fish Festival in Marina Grande

Every last week of October Sorrento celebrated the Blue Fish Festival in Marina Grande.

At the sound of bells the fishing village will serve the culinary delights of the day's catch, prepared by local chefs and restaurateurs in accordance with the recipes of the best Sorrento culinary tradition.

Along the roads of the hamlet a gastronomical route will be traced to allow visitors to taste dihes based on fish, but also cakes and some good local wine.

The gastronomic highlights are pasta and beans with mussels, squid and the tubettoni with shrimp and fried or grilled calamari.

All the proceeds will be donated to the community and the church to fund projects to rebuild the village and for the maintenance of the local church of Sant 'Anna
