Cilento National Park
The National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano, Italy's second park in size, stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast at the foot of the Campania-Lucania Apennines, including the tops of Alburni Cervati and Gelbison and the coastal foothills of the M . Bulgheria and M. Stella.
The extraordinary natural lanscapes, due to the considerable heterogeneity of the territory, are flanked by the mythical and mysterious character of a land rich in history and culture: the chant of the nymph Leucosia, the beaches where Palinuro left Aeneas, the remains of the Greek colonies of Elea and Paestum, the splendid Certosa di Padula and whatever else you can find in a land waiting to be discovered.
Those who choose to spend their holidays in the Cilento Park cannot help being fascinated by the crystal clear water of the coast, the rolling hills covered with olive trees and dotted with medieval towns.
Moreover, all the Cilento is famous for the tasty traditional cuisine, based on the many local products and recipes handed down from mother to daughter creating a variety of dishes that you can taste not only in the many restaurants but also at local festivals and fairs organized during the summer.
The sea in Cilento Coast is one of the most beautiful of Italy: hundred kilometres of beaches, cliffs shaped by the sun and wind, hidden creeks and mysterious caves.
The Cilento Coast begins in Paestum and ends in Sapri, offering great variety of holiday activities: wide and sandy beaches with crystal clear sea, diving in the numerous grottos and hiking, cycling, riding or exploring on horseback the quaint medieval villages still wedded to a traditional way of life.
From the characteristic village of Agropoli, via Santa Maria di Castellabate, Pisciotta, Pioppi, Acciaroli, not forgetting the beautiful Punta Licosa, one of the first marine park in Italy, until Palinuro, the most fashionable and famous seaside resort of Cilento, which is characterized by beautiful beaches and a coastline rich in ravines and caves, among which the most famous and visited is without a doubt the Blue Grotto.
A natural environment still intact and untouched, characterized by hills, rivers and trails: the perfect place for lovers of outdoor walking and trekking.
But the National Park of Cilento is also speleological, with the beautiful sites of the Castelcivita Caves and the Grottos dell’ Angelo in Pertosa.
Galleries, tunnels, huge grottos: an atmosphere that makes them unique in the world, a paradise for the beauty and shapes of its stalactites and stalagmites, fascinating examples of the fantasy and magic of nature.
Sea, nature, gastronomy, but also lots of history and art
The Cilento is indeed home of the two archaeological sites that, together with the ruins of Paestum, are the pride of the Salerno province: the archaeological excavations of Velia, with the renowned Porta Rosa, and those of Ancient Volcei in the district of Buccino
But the beauty of the Cilento does not end here: the Cilento area is in fact home to numerous testimonies of the Christian worship of its inhabitants.
The most famous is without doubt the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, the largest monastery in southern Italy where is possible to visit not just the beautiful garden, but the entire complex, with the cloisters, the altars and the lodgings of the monks.
So, if you think that your Italian vacation should be off the beaten path, yet close enough for day trips to some of the "usual suspects" (Pompeii, Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Positano and the Amalfi Coast -- even Rome), with a strong taste of authentic Italy and Mediterranean beaches, yes, Cilento is the place for you. And at night you'll get the chance to relax in this magic place where time has stopped and stress and chaos are unheard of.
